Keko Mwanga Primary School
At Keko Mwanga Primary School, many children face the burden of hunger and limited resources, making learning an uphill battle. Through our first year of the school feeding programme, we provided the nutrition they needed to thrive academically, creating an environment where they could truly focus on their studies.
When we first visited Keko Mwanga Primary School, we witnessed the harsh reality many students faced. The school had only eight run-down toilets to serve approximately 825 primary school students, along with teachers and staff. During a typical break, more than 100 people shared each toilet. It was clear the facilities could no longer meet the needs of the growing school community.
There was also an old kitchen on the grounds that had once provided meals, but it had fallen into disrepair. At the time, Brave Lights Foundation and Dhruv Management (U.S.) supported a subsidized meal programme where children contributed 1,000 Tanzanian shillings (approximately US$0.40) per day for a simple meal. For many families in this underserved community, however, even that small contribution was beyond their means. Some children ate while others went hungry, creating inequality among classmates.
Seeing this, we knew we had to act. Give a Future Foundation renovated the school's sanitation facilities and constructed a modern kitchen, creating the infrastructure needed to support every child. We then fully funded the school's feeding programme for its first year, ensuring that every student received a nutritious, high-quality meal free of charge. No child was left behind, and every student had the same opportunity to eat, learn, and succeed.
During the programme's first year, more than 825 meals were served every school day, giving children the nourishment and energy they needed to stay focused in the classroom. Today, the modern kitchen and improved facilities continue to benefit the school, providing a lasting foundation for future generations of students. Our vision extends beyond nutrition—we hope to see the school continue to grow with improved learning resources, including libraries, computer labs, and extracurricular opportunities, ensuring every child has the chance to reach their full potential.
